In the biblical texts that provide the basis for any historical map of the time, the dominant material relates to the terriorial allotments to the tribes. However, the historical and geographical interpretation of these texts remains highly controversial. Other geographical data, relating to various historical events of mostly uncontested chronology, are nevertheless also subject to varying interpretations as to their historical and geographical significance.
