Artist name spelling correction   (2014-01-23)
The correct spelling of the artist's name is Nina S. Bahlmann. She and her husband, Erwin Bahlmann, can be found in the 1930 and 1940 U.S. Federal Census for Milwaukee, Milwaukee County, Wisconsin. In 1930 they were next door neighbors to my grandparents, Thomas and Emma Pendergast, and my father, Thomas Pendergast, Jr. on Layton Blvd in Milwaukee. Ms. Bahlmann generously gave a copy of this artwork to my family in the 30's which remains a family treasure.
It is a beautiful illustration of the State of Wisconsin with icons denoting various historical events at the locations where they occurred. Among the illustrations are the birth of the Republican Party in Ripon, Wisconsin and the first Kindergarten in the United States in Watertown, Wisconsin.
It is my understanding that it was chosen in 1948 to be an official Centennial souvenir for the centennial celebration of Wisconsin becoming a State in 1848.
