Abstract:

This two-part documentary shows how bands have changed throughout our 200-year history as America has changed. Social, political, and economic events of our lives have become inseparable from the music of the band. Part 1 illustrates the rise of the town band movement in the 19th century through professional bands, including that of John Philip Sousa. Part 2 traces band movements of the 20th century: military bands, scholastic bands, and jazz. Featured.

Are the Takoma Chamber Players, recreating a Harmonie Band, circa 1800; Heritage Americana, recreating a Civil War Brass Band; the New Sousa Band, conducted by Keith Brion; the U.S. Marine Band; the U.S. Marine Drum and Bugle Corps; the Benny Goodman Band; and the University of Michigan Marching Band. Rare footage is included from the National Archives and the Smithsonian Institution. A wealth of information entertains, excites, and informs in a way never before.
