Abstract:

Nonprofit executive Eddie N. Williams was born in 1932. After working as a journalist, Williams received a congressional fellowship and parlayed his connections into a job at the State Department, where he worked for seven years. In 1968, he became director of the University of Chicago's Center for Policy Study and later became a university vice president. Williams took over as president of the fledgling Joint Center in 1972 and built the institution, which studies issues affecting African Americans, into a political powerhouse on Capitol Hill. In recognition of his leadership and contributions to policymaking, Williams received a prestigious MacArthur Foundation "Genius Grant" in 1988. Williams was also vice chairman of the Black Leadership Forum. He passed away on May 8, 2017 at 84.
