Ernest Green

Abstract:

Civil rights leader and investment executive Ernest G. Green was born in 1941 in Little Rock, Arkansas. He earned his Eagle Scout Award in 1956. Green made history as one of the “Little Rock Nine” who integrated Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas in 1957, the first to graduate on May 27, 1958. Green received his B.A. degree in 1962 from Michigan State University and his M.A. degree in sociology in 1964. In 1965, Green received an apprenticeship in the building trades from the Adolph Institute. He then directed the A. Phillip Randolph Education Fund. In 1977, Green served as assistant secretary in the Labor Department under President Jimmy Carter. After 1981, Green worked in the private sector. In 1985, he worked at Lehman Brothers as managing director. Green received numerous awards; and in, 1999, Green and the other Little Rock Nine members were awarded the Congressional Gold Medal by President Bill Clinton.
