Abstract:

Journalist John X. Miller, Jr. was born on September 11, 1955 in Henderson, North Carolina. He graduated from Washington and Lee University with his B.A. degree in journalism in 1977. After working as copy editor for The Roanoke Times & World News and Charlotte Observer, Miller was hired as an original staff member of USA Today in 1982. From 1991 to 1999, he served as executive editor of Pennsylvania’s Reporter and as managing editor of South Carolina’s Sun News. From 1999 to 2007, Miller worked at Detroit Free Press and the Detroit Media Partnership (DMP), first as the Free Press’ public editor, then as the DMP’s director of community affairs. In 2007, Miller was named chief executive officer of The Heat and Warmth Fund. After serving as editor of the Hickory Daily Record for three years, he was hired as the first African American managing editor of the Winston-Salem Journal in 2013.
