Abstract:

Newspaper executive Milton D. Coleman was born in 1947, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Coleman grew up in the Hillside Terrace public housing development. Coleman received his B.A. degree in history and literature from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. In 1974, Coleman was awarded a fellowship to attend the Michele Clark Summer Program for Minority Journalists at Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism. Coleman began his journalism career at the Milwaukee Courier and the Minneapolis Star. He also worked as a reporter of several minority oriented news outlets. In 1976, he went to work at the Washington Post. Twenty years later, Coleman was promoted to deputy managing editor of The Washington Post. In 2010, he was elected president of the American Society of News Editors (ASNE); and, in 2011, he was elected president of the Inter-American Press Association. In 2012, Coleman was chosen as the inaugural University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Foundation Alumni Fellow.
