Abstract:

College president and theologian Richard McKinney was born August 20, 1906 in Live Oak, Florida. Excelling in school, McKinney began preaching in 1934 while attending Andover Newton Theological Seminary. He earned his Ph.D. degree from Yale University in 1942. In 1944, McKinney became the first African American president of Storer College. In 1951, he went to Morgan State University where he spent most of his career, rising to dean of the College of Arts and Sciences in 1978. In the 1980s, McKinney devoted more time to research and writing while continuing to serve as visiting lecturer to Morgan State University and Coppin State College. McKinney wrote several books and served as chairman of the Board of Union Baptist Church. He was a lifetime member of the NAACP and the National Education Association. He was listed in Who's Who in Black America. McKinney passed away on October 28, 2005 at age 99.
