Abstract:

Lawyer and professor Theodore Michael Shaw was born on November 24, 1954 in New York City. He received his B.A. degree from Wesleyan University in 1976 and his J.D. degree from Columbia Law School in 1979. Shaw worked as a trial attorney in the Civil Rights Division of the United States Department of Justice until 1982, when he joined the NAACP Legal Defense Fund (LDF) as an assistant counsel and director of the Education Docket. In 1987, Shaw established LDF's Western Regional Office in Los Angeles. In 1990, he left LDF to join the faculty of the University of Michigan Law School, but rejoined LDF as associate director-counsel in 1993. On May 1, 2004, Shaw became the fifth director-counsel and president of LDF, succeeding Elaine Jones, where he served until 2008. He was Of Counsel to the law firm of Norton Rose Fulbright, and professor of professional practice at Columbia Law School.
