Abstract:

In this clip, Dr. Alexandra Levine, Chief of the Division of Hematology at the USC School of Medicine, talks about the strides that have been made in making sure the blood supply in the United States is safe in the wake of the HIV/AIDS pandemic. Although there is still a very small chance that blood from an individual with HIV can make it into the nation's blood supply, the blood supply in 1981-1982 was completely unprotected. In fact, Dr. Levine says when referring to the blood supply at that time, " ... we didn't even know what to look for."
