Abstract:

The Latino-and Asian-American children crowding Los Angeles' sprawling Hobart Boulevard Elementary face daunting odds: low-income households, an under-funded, overcrowded school, and a neighborhood known for crime, not opportunity. Despite this, teacher Rafe Esquith expects the best from his students. Living his motto "Be nice, work hard, there are no shortcuts," Esquith leads his fifth-graders through a rigorous core curriculum of English, mathematics, geography, and literature, culminating in an end-of-the year performance of a full-length, unabridged Shakespearean play, and proving that with enough WIll power, anyone can succeed.
