Abstract:

Everyone has heard the names of Walt Disney, Charlie Chaplin, Mary Pickford, Samuel Goldwyn, and Orson Welles, but few know that these "lone wolf" filmmakers secretly formed their own society with a mission to bring an end to the studio system of classic Hollywood. This is the story of the Society of Independent Motion Picture Producers (SIMPP). Utilizing previously-unpublished SIMPP records, 'Hollywood Renegades' shows how these filmmakers used their movies as weapons against the major studios. Read the hidden story behind SIMPP's Supreme Court victory that signaled the end of old Hollywood. This inside account of the rise and fall of SIMPP reveals why the society was taken over by the Walt Disney Studio, and how the influential group gradually became forgotten. 'Hollywood Renegades' uncovers fascinating new information about the independent producers who brought Hollywood out of the old studio era and into an age of multimedia, blockbusters, and corporate synergy. Discover how the independent movement of more than 50 years ago laid the foundation of modern Hollywood, and resulted in an independent struggle that continues today.
