Abstract:

Discusses literary and theological attempts to usurp the place of the Jews in the post-Holocaust world. Levels particularly sharp criticism against Jonathan Littell's novel "Les Bienveillantes" (2006), a fictional memoir of a former SS-officer in the Einsatzgruppen. Argues that the positive reception in France of the novel, which received the country's most prestigious literary prizes, expresses French anti-repentance for its part in the extermination of the Jews. Denounces "Les Bienveillantes" as pornography of death. Also examines the place of the Holocaust in George Steiner's work. Discusses the persistence of Christian antisemitism and the resurgence today of marcionism, i.e. Christian rejection of the Old Testament and Judas the Jew.
