Abstract:

In a purely biological sense, there is no such thing as a homosexual, simply homosexual acts and actors. Sexual preference is rooted not in genetics but rather in the social, psychological, and political context in which we live, and is derived mainly from how we perceive ourselves and those around us.

The last decade has seen dramatic progress in our knowledge of sexual identity, particularly in the area of homosexuality and the beliefs, fears, and social taboos that surround it. In this ground-breaking book, Lon G. Nungesser examines many of the important issues that anthropologists, historians, and psychologists are just now bringing to light: the origins and functions of today's prevalent antihomosexual attitudes.

Homosexual Acts, Actors, and Identities explores the authoritarian hierarchies that create and maintain harmful prejudices, and shows how the pressure to conform to preconceived notions of normality amounts to spiritual and physical oppression. Sexual stereotyping is at the crux of many of our country's social ills; it limits freedom of choice, inhibits personality development, and divides the American public, seriously damaging the national character.

The struggle for sexual definition and self-esteem has evolved in our time into a salient political issue. Homosexual Acts, Actors, and Identities helps to create a deeper understanding of the problems that arise when restrictive social values and strident sexual ideologies obstruct and repress personal liberty. It points they way to a resolution of the deep-seated fears and prejudices that impair whole segments of our society, and it will prove to be a valuable sourcebook for research and information for students of human sexuality, psychology, and sociology.
