Abstract:

The paper describes the history of five generations of the Judah family. The history is intended to be appreciated in two ways. The history of the family and the biographies of each generation, tell narrative arcs that are dramatic and sometimes poignant. Each generation of the family adjusts to different circumstances. But the family retains many of the same characteristics - they are risk takers, ambitious, intelligent and well read, with a gift for marrying well. The paper can also be seen as a history of America. The first Judah arrived in America before the country has won independence, and was caught up in Revolutionary War. His descendants traveled west and became leaders in law, business and politics. Their ambitions and travails mirrored those of the young country itself. They became leaders and helped the country grow. The history of the family is a thread to navigate the history of America.
