Abstract:

This thesis starts to state an overview of the current issues to the readers with two different major views/positions, Complementarian and Egalitarian, regarding women in ministry. However, in reality, the different views would be "interpreted" differently according to the situations. For example, it is not easy to find male leadership in a lot of house churches in China, so women have to take up the leadership role and nurture the people from their church spiritually. In order to further study the selected women in the gospels, readers are introduced to the women's position in the New Testament Era. With the understanding of the low view toward women in first century Palestine, this thesis begins to examine Luke 1:28-49 to see Mary, Jesus' mother, as the example used by God as part of His plan. Several passages, such as Matt 27:55, Matt 28:9-10, Mark 16:1, Luke 8:1-3, and John 20:14-18, serve as examples ofhow God used women disciples like Mary (called Magdalene), Joanna the wife of Cuza, Mary the wife of Clopas, Susanna, Salome, and many others who helped, cared, and supported the needs of the ministry as the witnesses and carriers of the Good News. After presenting God's ways to place women in His plan and ministry, readers gradually get to know how to serve the Lord effectively as a woman. This is exemplified through two other selected women's stories who experienced Jesus' power by putting their faith in Him (Matt 15:21-28, cf. Mark 7:24-30; Luke 7:44-50). In conclusion of this research, readers understand the necessity to recognize one's true self and identity in the Lord. Secondly, to face and to serve with those who have a 'first-century mind-set' requires wisdom from the Lord. Most importantly, those who have the desire to serve God, need to humble and walk with the Lord with perseverance, because the effectiveness ofthe ministry is the reflection of one's personal relationship with the Lord, whether in the home or in the church.
