Joey is a 13-year-old deaf ("I'm deaf, not retarded) girl, who befriends and ultimately champions Sukari, a chimpanzee raised as a human child. This is not a 'cute animal'story, far from it. Sukari communicates through sign language. Her bond with Joey (a fellow primate, 98.4% related, the story reminds us) is real, heartbreakingly so, right up to the poignant end. The story is well paced and rich with detail. The scene in the test lab will make you weep, better yet, think.

I happened to hear the author read two selections from this book at our local library a few weeks ago. Intrigued, I bought the book on the spot and had it read by 9:30 the following morning. That's how captivating this story is. Not only did I enjoy the passionate presentation of its theme, but I enjoyed the wealth of natural detail and the fully-wrought characters. What was particularly compelling for me was the skillful presentation of the complex problems faced by the heroine; her struggles are meaningful not only to the deaf, but to all of us, in all conditions, and all ages...things like anger, ambivalence, change, and courage in adversity. How do you face these problems down, and keep your spirit intact? Without being preachy, the engaging heroine succeeds in doing just that. Not for kids only...
