|Notes:||Letter from James K. Paulding to David Myerle concerning Paulding's role, while Secretary of the Navy, 1838-1841, in the procurement of an American supply of water-retted hemp from Myerle. Myerle ultimately failed to meet the contract, lost his factory and fortune, and filed a claim against the U.S. government for losses incurred in the project. Cf. Myerle, David.
