schema:description"Begun as an exploration of the meaning and function of fraternity membership in the lives of African American men on a predominantly white campus, the interview data revealed the important role the fraternity played in the construction of a unique masculine identity. This identity is connected both to Connell's (1997) model of hegemonic masculinity and to the model of Afrocentric socialization found in Akbar (1990) and W. Oliver (1989), among others. The content of this identity forms a sort of amalgamation masculinity which incorporates the sometimes contradictory social locations (race, class, and gender) of the fraternity members."
