Abstract:

The video demystifies the process of creating and maintaining Japanese-style gardens through examples gleaned from nationally respected designer David Slawson's garden at Carleton College. Later, during May 2004, David presented his slide lecture at Carleton College; he elaborates on the nature of this landscape art. You will see how the garden maker creates a richly-textured landscape experience. He begins by exploring how our world view influences the decisions we make about our home and garden design. Through images of nature and gardens, he illustrated key design principles for "painting" a scene with rocks and plants to evoke our most deeply cherished landscape experiences. David ends the program with his recent work in Arkansas and the message that inspires his art.
