Résumé:

Primarily a history of Vlad III (more often referred to as Vlad Dracula, Vlad Tepes or Vlad the Impaler), the namesake and partial inspiration behind the fictional Count Dracula of Bram Stoker's novel. Totally unconnected to vampirism, the historical Dracula was a Wallachian ruler widely known for his cruelty, though he is also sometimes regarded as a Romanian national hero, largely for his defense against invading Turks. Also includes chapters on vampires myths, Erzsébet Báthory (a 17th century who fed upon and bathed in blood in the belief that it would preserve her youth) and the fictional Dracula in literature and film. Also contains translations of contemporary German and Russian tales of Vlad III (Manuscript No. 806 at the Monastery Library of St. Gall, Switzerland and MS 11/1088 in the Kirillov-Belozersky Monastery Collection at the Saltykov-Schredin Public Library, the latter of which is translated into English for the first time) and then-current Romanian oral folktales about Vlad III.
