I am pleased and proud to review India and Asia, the P. C. Bagchi Centenary Volume, published by The Progressive Publishers.
Prof.P.C.Bagchi (1898-1956) was an outstanding orientalist, who gave a new perspective to research on Indian History and Culture with his pioneering work in field of Sinology, Tibetology, Central Asian and Buddhistic Studies.
Being a keen enthusiast, I found this volume highly illuminating and inspiring, especially to the researchers in these interdisciplinary areas of Indian history and culture. This volume consists of three parts : Part1 contains eleven articles by distinguished scholars on Prof.P.C.Bagchi, his life and various aspects of his scholarship which will no doubt be an eye opener to present day readers. The article India and China; A Note on a Gift from the Peking University gives us a glimpse of the deep impact Prof.Bagchi had on the Chinese people during his tenure as the first visiting professor of Sino-Indologist deputed by the government of independent India. Part II contains 24 thought provoking articles in honour of Prof. P. C. Bagchi contributed by reputed international scholars, which throw light on a variety of areas of history and culture, ranging from tantric buddhism and chinese poetry to linguistics.
The third Part contains select bibliography of P. C. Bagchi's books, articles in French, English and Bengali. A list of books, articles and orbituaries on Prof. P. C. Bagchi is also included in this part. A number of photographs and a few letters of the great savant, Prof. Sylvain Levi, to Prof. P. C. Bagchi have also made the volume more captivating. In summary, I strongly suggest that libraries across the globe acquire a copy of this invaluable book.
