Finally, he closes with reminiscences concerning an experience with Mayo Clinic doctors S. Starr Judd and Donald Balfour; Sister Anna Marie, a teacher of speech and dramatics at the College of St. Catherine (St. Paul, Minn.); and tour guides in Dublin, Paris, and Rome.  Read more...

Abstract:

Reminiscences of a St. Paul (Minn.) physician and community leader who was educated at the University of Minnesota, headed medical services for the Manhattan Project during World War II, and maintained a private practice through the 1970s.

In section I, Rea relates stories of his ancestors; his parents' courtship and early life in Forsyth, Montana; and family Christmases and other childhood experiences.

In section II, Rea describes the influence on his career of severalTwin Cities teaching physicians: Owen H. Wangensteen, George Fahr, Eric Temple Bell, and Maurice B. Visscher.

In section III, Rea describes his work as chief of medical services for the Manhattan Project during World War II. He relates anecdotes about General Leslie Groves, J. Robert Oppenheimer, Arthur H. Compton, and events medical and social.

In section IV, Rea talks about family life, personal and professional encounters with Russians (including Andrei Gromyko), and several remarkable men he had known. He describes visits by the Metropolitan Opera to the Twin Cities and his participation as host in a series of opera-related question-and-answer programs on KTCA television. There was a trip to Rome to attend Archbishop William O. Brady, who had suffered a heart attack on his way there. Jumping back in time, he describes his uncle's memories of planning and promotion for the Jack Dempsey-Tommy Gibbons prize fight on July 4, 1923, in Shelby, Montana; and the problems the same uncle (Henry Gerharz) had in trying to reopen his closed bank.
