Abstract:

Host James Lipton conducts a thirty-five-part series of in-depth interviews before a live audience with a selection of America's leading motion-picture and theater actors and actresses, as well as producer/directors Norman Jewison, Sidney Lumet, Mike Nichols, Arthur Penn, Sydney Pollack, and Mark Rydell, playwright Neil Simon, and composer Stephen Sondheim. Each person interviewed talks about his or her life, career and colleagues, as well as their individual methods of working. Each interview is enhanced with clips and still photographs from the life and work of each interviewee. The history and teaching methods of the Actors Studio in New York is frequently commented upon by the various participants. The interviews are followed by question and answer sessions with the audience, which consisted of student actors, directors and playwrights enrolled in seminars in the Dramatic Arts Program given at the New School in New York. Includes as a supplement (Part 36 of the set) an eighteen-minute "International Sales Reel," which consists of selected excerpts from six of the programs, featuring Paul Newman, Alec Baldwin, Stephen Sondheim, Sidney Lumet, Arthur Miller, and Shelley Winters, all with host James Lipton. This supplementary reel has the title Inside the Actors Studio: the craft of theater and film, and was produced in 1995 by Betelguese Productions for the New School.
