Description: The file contains three documents: 1) Abbot's recollections of 67 years at the Smithsonian Institutution, including reminiscences about famous people in the arts, sports, and sciences; work and contacts with the Carnegie Institution and Mount Wilson Observatory; growth of Washington, DC; work of solar observations, solar radiation, meteorology, and rocketry; inventions and patents; and influences and unfulfilled plans; 2)an eight-page biographical sketch prepared in 1956 (by an unknown author) briefly describing Abbot's advanced education (M. Sc.) at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the early 1890s; his association with Samuel P. Langley at the Smithsonian and their collaboration on the Annals of the Astrophysical Observatory of the Smithsonian Institution; solar eclipse expeditions; measurements of the solar constants of radiation; his invention of pyroheliometers; honorary doctorates received; his interest in solar power, long-range weather forecasting, solar variation periods, and heat distribution in the spectra of brighter stars; patents held; honors and awards received; publications; and society memberships; and 3) responses (by Abbot) to questionnaire sent as part of the AIP Project for the History of Recent Physics in the United States.
