Abstract:

Armstrong talks about his reasons for taking up the study of philosophy; influence of John Anderson on his political thinking; experiences at Oxford and Birkbeck College, London University and his Melbourne University appointment. He then talks about his appointment to the Challis Chair of Philosophy at Sydney University in 1964 and his particular fields of philosophy :- metaphysics, epistemology and philosophy of the mind. Armstrong then discusses Knopfelmacher and the opposition to his appointment; involvement with "Quadrant"; Philosophy Dept's split into two depts and his views on the future of philosophy.

Armstrong then provides a detailed description of his undergraduate philosophical education at Sydney University; publications "Berkeley's theory of vision", "Bodily sensations" and "Perception and the physical world"; work of Jack Smart and Ullin Place on "Australian materialism"; views on Karl Popper; publication, "A materialist theory of the mind" and his interests in belief, knowledge and now ontology. He then discusses the concepts of "universals", laws of nature, possibility and possible worlds and his work on these matters as well as his experiences in Poland.
