Tape-recorded interviews conducted by O'Brien as research for his doctoral dissertation, "The Development of a New Left in the United States, 1960-1965" (University of Wisconsin-Madison, 1971).

Among the topics discussed were political activism on campuses during the early 1960s, the Student Peace Union, Students for a Democratic Society (SDS), and civil rights and the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC).
