Abstract:

Lyricist Tim Rice and director Des McAnuff each discuss the stage musical Chess in two separately taped interviews conducted by an unidentified, offscreen interviewer. Rice, lyricist for the show, and McAnuff, director of the 1990 national tour, also discuss other highlights of their respective careers. Rice describes his working relationship with composer Andrew Lloyd Webber and their work on Evita; McAnuff speaks of working for the New York Shakespeare Festival, co-founding Dodger Theatricals, his experiences as artistic director of the La Jolla Playhouse in California, and his work as director on such shows as Big river and A walk in the woods. Includes brief excerpts from the 1990 touring production of Chess.
