Abstract:

"The state of Missouri, divided between Confederate and Union sentiment, becomes a ravaged battleground as neighbors take up the sword against each other. The Clark family, headed by young David since father joined Sherman's regiment, takes refuge on Spook Island, a deserted, half-hidden sanctuary from which they can see the raiders attack and burn their property. Accustomed to the refinements of traditional southern living (yet opposed to its principles) the family has a difficult time adjusting to the crude conditions of the island. The plot centers on David who with his friend and servant Caleb, finds enough adventure here to compensate for his inability to serve in the Union Army with his father."--Kirkus Reviews.
