Summary:	HTML (HyperText Markup Language), a simple application of SGML-like markup, is a method for expressing document structure in the World Wide Web. Its simplicity has contributed to its popularity and made Web publishing more accessible, but that same simplicity makes it difficult to richly describe documents. This description is increasingly important for effective resource discovery and retrieval as more and more networked data becomes available. Object characterization ranges from automated full-text indexing to rich AACR2 description, the encoding rules used by most library catalogers. Effective description, validation, maintenance and duplication are all issues that will contribute to the growth of the information landscape.
