|Notes:||Ivan Doig, once a sheep rancher in Montana, began his career as a novelist of the American West by reading comic books. After a brief stint in Illinois as a magazine journalist, Doig and his wife Carol moved to Seattle in 1966, where he got his doctorate in history from the University of Washington. His sensitive Montana memoir, This House of Sky, was a finalist for the National Book Award.
