Abstract:

The James Buchanan papers cover the entire span of his political career. They consists of a check payable to Joseph Ogelby, 1834; twenty-four letters and one envelope from Buchanan, 1811-1865; five engraved portraits of Buchanan at various stages of his life (two engraved by John Chester Buttre, one from a daguerreotype by Mathew B. Brady; two engraved by Henry Bryan Hall, and one by John Sartain); an 1859 patent for land in Michigan to the widow of John Crocker for his service in the War of 1812; and the appointment of Friedrich Kühne as Vice-Consul of the Duchy of Saxe-Altenburg, 1859.

Among the recipients of letters from Buchanan are Thomas Carson, J.L. Dunn, Thomas L. Elder, James Sturgis Gillan, A. Boyd Hamilton, James Buchanan Henry, Jacob Hibshman, James Kellog, Jr., Joseph C.G. Kennedy, Benjamin Watkins Leigh, David Lynch, William L. Marcy, Henry Augustus Philip Muhlenberg, Nathaniel Niles, V.E. Piolett, Messrs. Stockton and Stokes, William Taggard, and Miss Maria B. Weaver. He also received a letter from Joel R. Poinsett.
