Abstract:

Photographs and photocopies of James Jesse Strang's diary covering 1831-1836; photographs and photocopies of his original correspondence, some third party correspondence, and documents of the Order of the Illuminati, reproduced from the originals in the Coe Collection of Strang Americana at Yale University. Photographs and photocopies of original and typescript transcriptions of Strang's and some third party correspondence. Correspondents include, among many others, George J. Adams, John C. Bennett, Samuel Bennett, Dennis Chidester, Lorenzo Dow Hickey, Myraette A. Strang Losee, Milo Milton Quaife, Joseph Smith III, William Smith, Mary Perce Strang and Wingfield Watson. The collection also includes related printed and photocopied periodical articles and newspaper clippings and miscellaneous issues of various periodicals, both contemporary with Strang's activities and dating from the 1970's onward, a typescript of the Chronicles of Voree, and numerous 20th century pamphlets and publications of the Mormon church. Also included are photographs and printed reproductions of maps of Beaver Island, both contemporary with Strang and those of more recent situation. Several bound volumes belonging to Strang include a volume of Shakespeare's complete works, an 1832 edition of Bibliotheca classica by J. Lempriere, Journal of the House of Representatives of the State of Michigan 1853, a typescript of Extracts from the Journal for 1853, and a volume of the 1917 Annual publications Historical Society of California containing letters of George Miller. Materials relate chiefly to Strang's activities from his time in Wisconsin to the establishment on Beaver Island in 1847 or the Strangite Mormon colony, his service in the Michigan legislature from 1852-1856, and his 1856 assassination. All materials were collected by Doyle C. Fitzpatrick in the course of his research for his 1970 book, "The King Strang Story: A Narrative of the Beaver Island Mormons." The collection also includes some of Mr. Fitzpatrick's correspondence and periodical articles and newspaper clippings relating to his collection of Strang and Beaver Island materials and the research for and publication of his book.
