Correspondence, writings, legal and financial records, family papers, printed matter, and other papers relating primarily to Cain's work as a journalist with American Mercury and New York World and to his career as a novelist and Hollywood screenwriter. Subjects include the legal rights of authorship; censorship and obscenity questions; literary acquaintances including Michael Arlen, William Faulkner, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ernest Hemingway, and Sinclair Lewis; general literary matters; Cain's personal life; and Washington College, Chestertown, Md. Includes drafts of Cain's unfinished autobiography and of The Institute (1976), Mignon (1962), Past All Dishonor (1946), The Postman Always Rings Twice (1934), and other writings. Also includes papers of Cain's second, third, and fourth wives, Elina Sjöstedt Tyszecka Cain, Aileen Pringle, and Florence Macbeth; and of his literary executor, Alice M. Piper.
