Abstract:

Letters, manuscripts, autographs, drawings, and prints related to James Wolfe, collected for their autograph value. Most of the letters are addressed to Wolfe's mother and concern's his effects and papers. The correspondents include Thomas Bell, Wolfe's aide-de-camp; Welbore Ellis, the 1st Baron of Mednip; Philip Hardel, a London goldsmith; Thomas Fisher, an executor of Wolfe's estate; William Pitt, the Elder, and Samuel Francis Swinden, Wolfe's tutor, George Warde and Charles Warde. Also included are letters from Mrs. Wolfe to Wolfe's friend William Weston (1740, Dec. 16); Lord Shelbourne to Wolfe (1758, January); Wolfe's fiancee, Katherine Lowther to Mrs. Wolfe (1759, Oct. 25), and a note, in the hand of Thomas Bell, written at Montmorenci instructing "Major Dalling to come to Headquarters with both the captured women").

There are also letters that concern Wolfe's portraits and a collection of his papers in possession of the Rev. William Dealtry (ca. 1746-1834) and Dawson Turner's projected bioraphy of Wolfe; a portion of Robert Southey's unfinished and unpublished Life of General Wolfe (1831), poems on Wolfe's death including those by Samuel Francis Swinden and Oliver Goldsmith (the latter was published in October 1759); clipped signatures of Guy Carleton, Ralph Burton, and James Wolfe, and a copy of the engraving "General Wolfe killed at the Sige of Quebec. September 14, 1759" (W. & J. Stratford, Nov. 17, 1792).

Include: a 1759 caricature by George Townshend (with Wolfe saying to Canadian women "Approach, chere dames, there is nothing to fear"); a small round watercolor sketch of Wolfe inscribed "Quebec 1759," and a watercolor and pencil sketches by Hervey Smyth. As seen from the accompanying correspondence, Smyth's sketches were exhibited at London Instituion in 1828. There is also a series of penicl sketches, by William Makepeace Thackeray, for his Virginians. There is a pencil sketch and the inscription for Joseph Wilton's Wolfe memorial in the Westminster Abbey.
