Abstract:
The collection contains papers relating to many aspects of the career of Jay Cooke, financer of the U.S. Civil War, correspondence with and of influential men of the time, such as Salmon P. Chase, Rutherford B. Hayes, Henry D. Cooke, and Jay Cooke, Jr., containing information on the conduct and financing of the Civil War, nationalization of banks, westward expansion, railroad building (especially the Northern Pacific Railroad), etc.
