Abstract:

Jean-Baptiste Cléry, King Louis XVI's personal valet de chambre, shared the royal family's captivity in a damp medieval prison, experienced their cruel treatment by callous guards and officials, and witnessed their anguish at being condemned to the executioner's blade. Through Cléry's testimony (he was the only personal servant permitted to remain with the condemned family in the Temple Prison) we get a unique and intimate glimpse of the most terrifying personal experiences of the French Revolution.
