Abstract:

Views of librarian and former chief of the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, Jean Blackwell Hutson dated approximately between 1935 and 1985. Collection includes portraits of a younger and older Hutson, some studio portraits, some candid. Hutson is also seen in many group portraits at different New York Public Library branch events, conferences (including a conference on publishing at the University of Ife, Nigeria 1973), and receiving awards. In the group portraits Hutson is seen with, among others, Langston Hughes, John Killens, Dr. James E. Allen, Robert F. Wagner, Betty Granger, James E. Hinton and J.A. Rogers. Also included in the collection are photos taken at Hutson's retirement party in 1985 showing her gifts, NYPL president Vavtan Gregorian and some Schomburg Center staff. Two contact sheets show Hutson at the Schomburg Center and arriving somewhere in an airplane. Half, three-quarter and full-length views are included.
