Abstract:

Jerry Brown talks about his scientific research work in northern Alaska, particularly working out of Barrow and the Arctic Research Laboratory (ARL) later known as the Naval Arctic Research Lab (NARL), and the progression of his career, coming to Barrow after graduating from Rutgers University, working under Dr. Lowell Douglas, growing up in New Jersey, doing his PhD project in the Northern Brooks Range along the Okpalik River, working at the lab in Barrow, meeting his wife in Barrow, the flood in Barrow in 1963, working for the Army's Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory (CRREL), working the the ice tunnel by Footprint Slough, life at camp, establishment of the International Biological Program in 1969, Dr. Frank Pitelka and the Tundra Biome Project (TBP), interdisciplinary research projects such as the Outer Continental Shelf Environmental Assessment Program (OSCEAP), the establishment of the Toolik Research Station, Barrow's importance for science, the Barrow Environmental Observatory (BEO), Richard Glenn, Tom Albert, Ukpeakgivk Inupiat Corporation (UIC) Board, working at the National Science Foundation (NSF) on the Interagency Arctic Research Policy Committee and planning and helping with the International Conference on Permafrost.
