Abstract:

Correspondence; diaries; journals; travel diaries; mss. of sermons, poems, essays, and other writings; business records; financial papers; printed works; biographical and genealogical materials; drawings and reproductions of paintings and photographs; and other papers, relating to members of the Hand, Fiske, and Aldrich families. Principal persons represented include Joseph Winborn Hand (1792-1844), solicitor in the U.S. Post Office Dept. and chief clerk in the Patent Office, of Washington, D.C.; his wife, the former Catherine Worthington Fowler (1801-1865); their daughter, Elizabeth Worthington Hand Fiske (1835-1919); Elizabeth's husband, Asa Severance Fiske (1833-1925), a Congregational clergyman; the Fiskes' daughter, Zoë Worthington Fiske Aldrich (1864-1942); and Zoë's husband, Morton Arnold Aldrich (1874-1956). Other family members represented include Elnathan Chauncy (1724-1796), clergyman, of Connecticut; Return Jonathan Meigs (1740-1823), Continental army officer and agent of the U.S. Office of Indian Affairs for the Cherokee Indians; Return Jonathan Meigs (1764-1824), U.S. senator and public official of Ohio; William Chauncey Fowler (1793-1881), author and professor at Middlebury College and Amherst College; and Samuel Wheelock Fiske (1828-1864), Congregational clergyman and Union army officer.

Includes papers of the Chauncy (later) Chauncey family; sermons (1759-1798) for an American Indian congregation probably written by Elnathan Chauncy; Joseph Hand's letters, chiefly to his wife, Catharine, discussing national political leaders and events and local affairs in Washington, D.C. (1816-1844); and Civil War diaries and letters of Samuel Wheelock Fiske as commander of a company in the 14th Connecticut Infantry, of Asa Severance Fiske as chaplain for the Fourth Minnesota Infantry, and of several other Fiske and Hand family members.
