Abstract:

Consisting chiefly of correspondence and other papers re Hungerpiller's anthology, South Carolina Literature (1931), including correspondence with authors, and replies (1928) to his survey of principals and teachers re the need for an anthology which could be used as a text in schools.

Also including manuscript poetry by John C Hungerpiller; circular letters of the S.C. Cotton Growers' Cooperative Association; and manuscript, 14 Mar. 1924, "Specific Working Plans for the Co-operative Teaching of English in All Subjects," a paper read by Hungerpiller before the Department of Teachers of English of the S.C. Teachers Association.

Correspondents include Lily Strickland Anderson, Henry Bellamann, John Bennett (12 Aug. 1922), W.G. Blake (1 Aug. [19]27), DuBose Heyward, Edwin Nungezer (4 Nov. 1927, 9 Jan. 1931), Julia Peterkin ([1931]), James Henry Rice, Jr. (16 July 1925), Franklin D. Roosevelt (14 Nov. 1932), Archibald Rutledge (12 July 1928, 10 Aug. 1933), Stanhope Sams (2 Feb. 1931).

Microfilm reel (R809) contains 211 printed items, 1924-1974, newspaper articles re various S.C. authors; reviews of their works; published poetry, and Patterson Wardlaw; editorial, 18 Aug. 1940, published in The State newspaper, "The Negro and the New Deal: Archibald Rutledge in The South Atlantic Monthly"; newspaper article, 9 July 1967, "Years in College--Remembered" by Archibald Rutledge; and essay, 14 Apr. 1940, re visit of Marquis de Lafayette to South Carolina during March 1825.

Reel also includes obituary notices of Bernard M. Baruch, John Bennett, Julia Peterkin, Alexander S. Salley, Stanhope Sams, Herbert Ravenel Sass, Patterson Wardlaw, and Yates Snowden.
