Text ("Notes to the plates," 74 pages at end) consists of the letterpress accompanying each plate in the original edition. Without the original Preface and Introduction; the Preface to the Supplement; and the 42 leaves of letterpress in the Supplement containing descriptions of species that are not illustrated.
Originally issued in 25 parts, 1849-1861, and then cumulated as: A monograph of the Trochilidae, or family of humming-birds. London : Published by the author,1861. The Supplement was originally issued in 5 parts, 1880-1887, by Gould (part 1) and H. Sotheran, London (parts 2-5); it was completed after Gould's death by R. Bowdler Sharpe, and edited by Osbert Salvin.
Illustrations were sketched by Gould from specimens and drawn and lithographed by H.C. Richter; in the Supplement, chiefly sketched by Gould and drawn and lithographed by W. Hart (some credited to Hart alone). In the original edition, they were hand-colored by Gabriel Bayfield and Hart; in the Supplement, by Hart alone.
