Abstract:

Correspondence; photographs; annotated volumes; clippings from magazines, newspapers, exhibition and auction sales catalogues; and notes, narratives and some writing drafts document John Hill Morgan's research on George Washington portraits and other early American works. Contains approximately 500 black & white photos, as well as hundreds of additional images of Washington portraits in clippings and postcards. The bulk of the collection is Morgan's research and correspondence for his 1931 book Life Portraits of George Washington and Their Replicas, which he co-authored with Mantle Fielding. The provenance, condition, ownership and attribution of the portraits are documented in research files that Morgan continued to update after the book's publication.

Morgan's research on Gilbert Stuart includes reference materials and the annotated volumes of Gilbert Stuart: An Illustrated Descriptive List of His Works (1926) by Lawrence Park, to which Morgan contributed a biography of Stuart. Additional research of note concerns Frank Bayley's sale of an alleged Stuart Washington portrait later determined to be a copy, and a series of fake drawings sold in the 1920s and early 1930s by George J. Shepard. The drawings were reputed to be by, among others, Thomas Sully, Gilbert Stuart, John Trumball, Charles Willson Peale, and Rembrandt Peale.

Correspondents include Mantle Fielding, Royal Cortissoz, Frank Bayley of the Copley Gallery, Theodore Bolton, Theodore Sizer, Harry MacNeill Bland of the Bland Gallery, J.S. Frelinghuysen, Albert Rosenthal and Richard F. Cleveland, son of Grover Cleveland, in reference to the Shepard-Hughes-Danton fakes.
