Abstract:

ORAL HISTORY 2014-16-05 PT. 1 John Kelley talks about personal background, growing up in Philadelphia, attending LaSalle College, his military experience, finishing his degree at Pennsylvania State, why he went into geophysics and geochemistry, Dave Keeling, Charles Thomas, working at Pt. Barrow, meeting Otto Geist, meeting Max Brewer, working on Project Husky, studying the mass and momentum transfer across arctic waters and land, Max Britton, looking at carbon dioxide variation in the arctic atmosphere, building their own instruments for measurement, working with Keeling, the micro-meteorological project on Plover Point, the storm in 1974 destroying facilities, moving their study sites to North meadow Lake, getting his Ph. D. at the University of Nagoya in Japan in 1973, his faculty position at the University of Alaska, working as director of NARL, studying carbon dioxide in the ocean and sea ice, the vessels used at NARL, joining the faculty at the university in 1969, working for the state of Alaska, the Outer Continental Shelf Environmental Assessment Program, and Bob Weeden.

ORAL HISTORY 2014-16-05 PT. 2 John Kelley talks about working at the National Science Foundation, Joe Fletcher, Max Britton asking him to apply to be director of NARL, taking the position in 1976, being science liaison officer for OCSEAP, science, math, and engineering for Native students, serving as director of NARL, trying to preserve old study sites, climatic change, teaching at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, research, public service, using ATN for remote education, teaching courses after he retired, getting tenure, changes in academia, serving on committees in his college and at the university level, NARL being run by two different leaders, the Navy commander and the scientific director, and monitoring the movement of T3,

ORAL HISTORY 2014-16-05 PT. 3 John Kelley talks about the landing on a Russian ice station, tracking T3 for several years, supporting a lot of different projects, his interest in acoustics, monitoring whales with acoustics, types of financial support and conflict of interest, and remaining neutral as an academic.
