Contents: One moment Xiko was just ahead, the next he had disappeared behind a tree. Almost immediately they heard his scream, a thin cry of pure terror that froze the blood. Phumzile and Jeremy stopped in their tracks. "What was that?" "It was Xiko! Come on!" They rounded the tree and came to a sudden halt, the breath catching in their throats. Xiko was lying on his back, flat on the ground, his hands and arms pressed into the sand above his head. They could see that he was still alive, for his hands were clenching and unclenching. They could also see the blood. The leopard stood over him and watched them with fierce eyes, its head low and its ears flat against the side of its head. "Phumzile," Jeremy said, his voice tight as he struggled to contain his fear, "we can't just stand here. We have to do something." Stranded in a strange land, in a distant time, Jeremy has had to learn new ways and face dangers and difficulties he could only have dreamt of before. But his greatest challenge is only just about to begin ... Sanlam Prize for young literature, 1996.
Responsibility: Peter Slingsby.
