ORAL HISTORY 2013-26-06 PT. 1. Jonathan Wills talks about learning about the Exxon Valdez oil spill when he was working as an editor On Shetland Island, Scotland, similar accident in Shetland, coming to Cordova after the oil spill, his book "A place in the sun" which was written after his trip to Cordova, Scott Sterling, becoming an activist, stress on the people in Cordova because of the oil spill, destruction of the herring season, divisions in Cordova, keeping in touch with people in Alaska, how long it will take Prince William Sound to recover from the oil spill, changes in species composition in Prince William Sound, preventing another oil spill, causes of oil spills, compensation after the Amoco Cadiz spill, no fault compensation, Automatic Identification Systems for tankers, improvements after oil spills, Rick Steiner's idea for a citizens' advisory council, meeting Rick Steiner, working with David Grimes and Rick Steiner in Scotland to prepare for the formation of a citizens' advisory council, establishment of the Prince William Sound Regional Citizens' Advisory Council (RCAC) by law, air quality problems at Valdez, ballast water, and reports by scientists with RCAC. Scott Sterling talks about his personal background, coming to Alaska in 1976, working as a lawyer for the city of Cordova, flying over the Exxon Valdez, playing a role in legislation, regulations and in the RCAC, getting to know Jonathan, Rick Steiner, Riki Ott, Dan Law, and Stan Stephens, the human side of the oil spill, litigation as remedy, reaching out to younger generations, education and awareness, and the leadership and inspiration of Stan Stephens.

Scott Sterling talks about Stan Stephens, hiring good advisers, consultants and scientists, the 25th anniversary of the spill, documenting history, the value of Prince William Sound, and Cliff Groh's comparison of Sovereign Wealth Fund of Norway and the Alaska Permanent Fund. Jonathan Wills talks about celebrating the life of Stan Stephens, the oil industry resisting the formation of organizations like the RCAC, technological failure, cutting corners and creating catastrophes, the Piper Alpha catastrophe, requirements for greater safety on deep water gas and oil fields, and money issues.

ORAL HISTORY 2013-26-06 PT. 3. Jonathan Wills talks about the use of the Norwegian permanent fund which promotes small businesses in small places and economic conditions in Shetland. Scott Sterling and Jonathan Wills talk about the future of the permanent fund in Alaska, preserving the Earth as a sustainable place to live, presence of plastics in the ocean, alternative energy, oil companies following procedures, and avoiding volunteer burnout.
