Abstract:

The collection contains photographs of Atlanta, Georgia, including federal and state buildings, retail stores and businesses, streets, expressways, churches, hospitals, colleges and residences. Included are photographs of the Georgia State Capitol, Atlanta City Hall, Federal Penitentiary, Atlanta Naval Air Station, Carnegie Library, Atlanta Municipal Auditorium, The Journal Building, Terminal and Union Stations, Cathedral of St. Philip, Christ the King Cathedral, Glenn Memorial Church, Emory University, Oglethorpe University, Georgia Institute of Technology, Emory Hospital, Georgia Baptist Hospital (now known as Atlanta Medical Center), Crawford Long Hospital, Jesse Parker Williams Hospital, Peachtree Street, Ponce de Leon Avenue, North Avenue and Peachtree Industrial Boulevard. Peachtree Industrial Boulevard features the John Deere Plow Company and the General Motors Assembly Plant. There are also images of Davison's Department Store (now known as Macy's), Rich's Department Store, Sears and Roebuck, Southern Railway Building, Ford Assembly Plant, Piedmont Hotel, Georgian Hotel, Kimball House and the Buckhead residences of prominent Atlantans such as Sam Worley, Robert W. Woodruff, George Woodruff, and Edward Inman (home known as the Swan House). The collection also includes an image of a sign apparently used to deter employees from coming to work drunk. It is unknown where the sign was planted, but is assumed to be placed there by management of a business enterprise. An image of a person, probably photographer Joseph C. Fisch is also included.
