Abstract:

Correspondence (1936-1954), news clippings (1919-1953), articles and notes (1933-1950), and memorabilia pertaining largely to Gilbert's activities as a leader in the cooperative movement in the Midwest, and as founder, editor, and columnist (1933-1953) of the Midland Cooperator (Minneapolis). Other papers concern Minnesota politics and Gilbert's unsuccessful campaign for Congress as the Farmer-Labor candidate from the fifth district (1942), and the 1944 presidential election.

Articles by Gilbert (1933-1953) and an interview transcript (1954) discuss the cooperative movement, socialism, and his participation in the National Nonpartisan League and the Farmer-Labor party.

Correspondents include Gilbert's biographer, Davis Douthit; politicians Elmer A. Benson and Hubert H. Humphrey; E. R. Bowen, J. P. Warbasse, and Murray D. Lincoln of The Cooperative League of the U.S.; Arthur Smaby of the Midland Cooperative, Inc.; M. W. Thatcher of the Farmers Union Grain Terminal Association; Josef Moravec, editor of a cooperative magazine in Prague, Czechoslovakia; Paul Sweezy, editor of the Monthly Review; Frank P. Zeidler, socialist mayor of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; Meridel LeSueur, and his brother Alfred Gilbert.

Oversize material includes legal certificates (1899-1901), citizenship papers (1894), a memorial to Robert M. Lafollette (approximately 1925), and a testimonial (1948).
