Abstract:

The collection consists of manuscript and typescript incoming and outgoing correspondence, meeting minutes, press releases, pamphlets, published and unpublished writings, drafts, patent applications, legal documents, photographs, clippings, scrapbooks, and other manuscript miscellanea, assembled and generated during Joseph Lee's political career and participation in civic activism. Some materials pertain to Lee's participation in the fight to save Boston's West End from demolition in the 1950s and 1960s, including photographs of West End homes in a volume published by the Committee to Save the West End entitled: And They Call This a Slum! West End the Part They Would Tear Down (see Box 8), and his investigation of Boston's Cocoanut Grove Fire in 1942 (see Box 9 or the link to online images below). His participation on the Boston School Committee during the 1930s to 1970s provides materials reflecting the challenges of the Committee during the 1960s with issues such as busing, integration, and the creation of Metco. Materials also pertain to Lee's unsuccessful runs for mayor (1941 and 1945), Governor's Council (1940), Senate campaigns (1942, 1944) and the U.S. House of Representatives from the 11th District (1946). Lee's interest in recreation is apparent in materials of the Boston Board of Recreation, which developed and supplied school playgrounds, and the Massachusetts Committee to Further Outdoor Recreation which he founded and chaired. Materials related to the Community Boating program, established by Lee in 1937, are also present in the collection. Also included are materials pertaining to Lee's manuscripts, "How to Sail a Boat" and "American Manifesto". Some materials relate to Lee's father, Joseph Lee (1862-1937).
