Abstract:

Collection includes audio recordings and transcripts of oral history interviews and speeches regarding the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee in Mississippi in the 1960s, with brief summaries. Topics include Southern life during the Jim Crow era; SNCC leadership and notable figures such as Robert "Bob" Moses; voter registration drives in Greenwood and McComb, Mississippi; the Mississippi Freedom Summer Project of 1964, including the training and participation of white student volunteers from the North; Southern white resistance and violence, particularly through the assassination of Medgar Evers and the murder of three Freedom Summer volunteers; and the foundation of the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party and its protest at the 1964 Democratic National Convention. Notable interviewees include Robert Parris Moses, Sam Block, Hazel Palmer, Bruce Payne, Gray Evans, Frank Smith, Barney Frank, Hardy Lott, Hollis Watkins, and many more. The majority of interviews were conducted by Joseph Sinsheimer, but some were conducted by historians Howard Zinn, Clayborne Carson, and John Dittmer. Collection also contains a small amount of manuscript materials from the civil rights era, including clippings, reports, scrapbooks, and correspondence.
